5 Tips by Aida on Becoming an Android Developer

1. Learn the Kotlin Language

Kotlin is a first-class language for writing android apps. Why? It has an extensive list of features, that help developers with day-to-day coding. It reduces the boilerplate code developers have to write – meaning increased productivity. It helps to write safer code, which means fewer mistakes and crashes. And it is also Java language compatible – meaning developers can call java-based code from Kotlin or vice-versa. Kotlin fundamentals include:

  1. Syntax and idioms
  2. OOP (Object-oriented programming)
  3. Data structures and algorithms

2. Learn Android Framework Basics

Android development is impossible without knowing the fundamentals of its platform. Essentials include:

  1. Context
  2. App Components and Intent
  3. Gradle
  4. App configurations
  5. Unit testing
  6. Multithreading
  7. Security
  8. Navigation

Good to know: dependency management and 3rd party libraries.

3. Know the Tools

Two most important tools every Android developer should know how to use: Android Studio and version control systems.
Android Studio is an official IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for building android apps. It’s based on top IntelliJ’s IDEA and has tons of developer tools and features, that help you write android apps for mobile phones, TVs, watches, auto, etc.

Version Control Systems (VCS) are designed to track changes in the codebase, coordinate work among developers, and allow them to reference older versions later. There are multiple types of VCS that exist, but the most popular one is Git. The popular repository hosting service is github.com

4. Contribute to Open Source

Contributing to open-source projects might be a very time-consuming task, but it has some important outcomes, that beginners can benefit from. It helps to gain much deeper knowledge about the codebase. It helps to solve some real-world problems, that possibly many other developers face. It also helps to boost the reputation as a software engineer and leverage the career. Contributing to open source can be as little as fixing a typo in the documentation, and as big as introducing a completely new feature. github.com contains tons of open-source projects.

5. Share Your Learning

Writing code is one of the main responsibilities of a developer. It’s very important to start sharing the learnings as early as possible, so potential employers can see the progression. Create a profile on popular repo hosting service github.com and begin uploading the code snippets and projects. Another great place to share the learning is Twitter, use #AndroidDev hashtag.
