Low Impact of #EdTech
Consider the X.Y graph.
Now imagine two lines on that graph: one line showing exponential growth, the other flat and low. One of those of those lines represents our national expenditure on educational technologies, the other represents the impact of that investment on student learning. Which one is which?
The preponderance of evidence shows the average impact of #EdTech on student learning and achievement is undesirably low and hasn’t changed in 50 years (Hattie, in Magana 2019). Have we developed classrooms that are technologically rich but innovatively poor?
Sweet Spot is T3 Framework for Innovation
This is legitimate cause for concern. But, there is also legitimate cause for optimism: I’ve synthesized four decades of research on finding the sweet spot where pedagogy is most reliably enhanced by technology. The result is the T3 Framework for Innovation, a next-generation pedagogical model that puts learners, not edtech, at the center of the equation.
Compounding evidence shows that strategies in the T3 Framework not only help teachers work less, but increases student learning and achievement by as many as four times, perhaps even more.
That’s a quadrupling of student achievement caused by significantly reducing teachers’ workload.
How is this possible? My research findings are clear: Learning explodes when students use EdTech to become more involved in planning for their learning, creatively expressing and representing their knowledge gain, and actively evaluating and assessing their growth individually and collectively.
