My Review of the Longer Ray5 Laser Engraver

Recently, I had the opportunity to try out the Longer Ray5 Laser Engraver. While I received the engraver to review, I did not receive any other compensation for this review. Here are my personal thoughts and experiences with this fantastic tool, and why I believe it would be a valuable addition to any school maker space.

Ease of Setup and Use

Setting up the Longer Ray5 Laser Engraver was fairly easy. The package includes a micro-SD card with a USB adapter containing a comprehensive instructional video and written instructions. This ensured that even as a beginner, I could get started quickly and confidently, reducing the learning curve and allowing more time for creativity.

Pre-Installed Files and Test Materials

The Longer Ray5 comes with several pre-installed files on the micro-SD card and includes small pieces of wood for test engraving. This feature allowed me to start experimenting and creating right away without the need to source initial materials. It was a great way to get hands-on experience and see the potential of the engraver immediately.

Versatile and User-Friendly Software

The engraver recommends using LaserGRBL software, which supports various file types, including JPEGs, PNGs, and SVGs. This flexibility allows students to create and engrave a wide range of designs. The software’s settings are easy to adjust, enabling users to experiment with different configurations for optimal results. Whether you want to outline, fill, or create grayscale images, LaserGRBL makes the process straightforward. An alternative software, Lightburn, is available for those seeking more advanced features, although it is a premium service and requires a more complex setup.

Key settings you can adjust include lines per mm, direction of lines, fill options (outline, fill, or both), and grayscale or black and white. After creating a design, additional settings such as maximum laser power and design size can be fine-tuned. For non-cutting tasks, starting with around 20% laser power and experimenting from there is recommended.

Safety and Precision Features

Safety is a top priority with the Longer Ray5. While it shouldn’t be located in a completely public area due to the need for protective glasses during operation, it offers several features to ensure precise and safe usage. The tool menu allows users to manually control the laser for alignment purposes, and the engraver can show an outline of the design to help ensure proper positioning before starting the engraving process. This helps avoid errors and ensures that the final product is aligned correctly.

Quality and Consistency

The Longer Ray5 delivers impressive detail in both grayscale and uniform designs. While it may not handle extremely fine details like engraving on a pencil, it excels in producing high-quality results for a variety of projects. For cutting tasks, the engraver can make multiple passes to prevent burning on the edges, ensuring a clean finish. Once you find the optimal settings for your materials, creating new designs becomes quick and simple, allowing for consistent and repeatable results.
