What is the Black Lives Matter Movement?

This April, I had a great lineup of bookchats, starting with Hedreich Nichols, which I blogged about here. Her children’s book, What is the Black Lives Matter Movement? Is a MUST for your personal and school library!

All In: Taking A Gamble In Education

If you are in a school who is needing a change up, a fresh start where teachers, administrators, and the entire school community need to come together, All In: Taking a Gamble In Education by Kristen Nan and Dr. Jacie Maslyk would make an amazing book study. However, I can envision a grade level team or individuals coming together for a personal study. Sometimes that’s where we have to start, even though we know there is a lot more of work to do.

To the Edge: Successes & Failures Through Risk-Taking

Have you been asking yourself, “Is this what I want to do for the rest of my life?” Maybe you’ve been chewing on some personal changes, but aren’t sure whether you should say, “Yes” or stick around and see what comes next where you are in this moment? Pursue the next degree, apply for that coaching position, or move closer to family…if any of these strike a nerve, then Kyle Anderson’s memoir To the Edge: Successes & Failures Through Risk-Taking would be my recommendation!

Engagement is Not a Unicorn (It’s a Narwhal): Mind-Changing Theory and Strategies That Will Create Real Engagement

Closing April with Engagement is Not a Unicorn (It’s a Narwhal): Mind-Changing Theory and Strategies That Will Create Real Engagement by Dr. Heather Lyon energized me right when I needed it! This book is for those who are ready to get their students learning beyond compliancy! Dr. Lyon presents us with a book where real life practices and education theory come together.  There is no ounce of judgement as she writes from a teacher, coach, and admin perspective. This book is one to write in and is so engaging. I wish I had a book like this when I was doing my student teaching! I wish I had this book to complete with teachers I was mentoring! However, I am so thrilled to have this book NOW because the strategies she gives can be implemented immediately!! In fact, while I was reading it, I was also with my own students, my children, and I was able to see the levels of non-compliance, compliancy, interest, and absorption taking place!

True Story: Lessons That One Kid Taught Us

So April’s bookchats were pretty incredible, but there is one more book I want to feature. Author and educator Rachelle Dene Poth of True Story: Lessons That One Kid Taught Us sat down with me in March. If you need to feel like someone else out there knows what you are experiencing as an educator, this is the book for you.  The stories from Rachelle and those who contributed share about joy, loss, coming back, and all the many things our students teach and inspire us every year. This book got right to my heart and made me proud of who I am and where I come from. It’s just the book you want to read if you are wanting to reflect on this past year or past years! You are someone different today than you were when you first became a teacher! Celebrate this!
