A fun mock magazine cover I made for my amazing friend and incredible woman, Alice Keeler.

Women’s History Month

Are you so excited to spend the next month learning even more about the contributions to our society by women? As a mother, educator, author, Logistics Manager, social media consultant, and woman, I find myself surrounded by incredible women who truly leave me in awe!

Because of my work with EduMatch Publishing as Logistics Manager, I wanted to start a campaign to celebrate the #WomenOfEduMatch.  I started with the CEO/Founder Dr. Sarah Thomas.  I absolutely loved the response of support for this wonderful woman when I posted this on our social media accounts, but especially in our EduMatch Publishing Facebook Community.

Then the idea hit me to let my own students, my kids, do this too!! For the next month, their reading assignment is going to be choosing books about or written by women. One of the artifacts of their learning will be to choose a woman to make a mock magazine cover! They might like to do this multiple times or just once, but I’ve already shown my oldest daughter how to do this when we made a magazine cover for a book we read this afternoon, I AM Valuable by Dr. Deshunna Monay Ricks

You Can Do It Too!

In fact, do this for yourself, or for a woman you appreciate, so you will feel comfortable helping your students.

I have some steps/suggestions for you to follow:

  1. Get your free educator account with Canva
  2. When looking for a template, search “magazine covers.” Choose a cover that fits the personality or message you are showcasing. You can change colors once you’ve chosen the template, so keep that in mind.
  3. Upload the pictures you want to add to your cover. Follow the template suggestions or delete them and start from scratch!
  4. Play with the menu for different fonts, elements, and headings to add!
  5. When downloading, make sure to change this to JPG (most of them are PDF by default) and choose only one page if there are more pages with the template but you are not using them.
  6. SHARE what you create on your social media account and tag the woman you are celebrating!
Don’t forget to change to JPG before downloading! Make sure to share and honor an amazing woman in your life!

Digital Citizenship

Use this as a natural way to talk about copyright, social media etiquette, and internet safety with your students. Sharing the creations online may or not be something you can do. If you can’t share them online, you might be able to print them out and create a #WomensHistoryMonth bulletin board with your students’ creations all month long.

Have Fun & Tag Me!

If you have fun and success with this assignment, feel free to share and tag me @mjmcalliwrites on Twitter! I’ll be sharing our creations all month long as well.
