Newsela for Distance Learning

Even through times of disruption, the right resource can keep learning going. Over the past 10 weeks, Newsela quickly adapted to provide new resources for teachers to maintain student learning connections. Newsela partners with the best content providers, such as National Geographic and The Associated Press to provide authentic, accessible and standards aligned instructional resources to schools and districts.

From virtual PD to virtual field trips, the heart of this new Newsela content is to guide educators towards equitable solutions for remote teaching. Check out some of the highlights, plus, they are all free until the end of the school year.

If you are in need of a go-to for Distance Learning content, bookmark this page. The Newsela Distance Learning Collection includes responsive content, daily lesson plans and links to on-demand PD. Educators can find new articles such as “Favorite 5 minute breaks” and “Establishing a new routine” to share with students. Or if you are in need of more guided support, check out the daily lesson plans. These include week-by-week plans with daily lessons that link to articles with student instructions. There is even a printable student check-list so they can keep track of their work. This page will even guide educators to on-demand PD resources, like the “Remote Teaching Toolkit”.

Provide your students with new interactive, at-home experiences. Have students explore the Newsela Virtual Field Trips to zoos, national parks and science museums. Or have them ‘travel’ to world-class institutions like the British Museum or the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in the Newseal Virtual Museum Tours. Want to provide more STEM connections? Newsela partnered with Tuva Labs to create interactive data sets that link to a text set for cross-curricular activities.

With so many changes to learning routines, educators can find support with on-demand professional learning on the Newsela Educator Center. This page includes on-demand toolkits, videos and self-paced courses to help build remote teaching expertise. You can also search for FAQs where you need the most help. Plus, level-up your learning and become a Newsela Certified Educator. It’s a great way to build Newsela confidence, and earn a badge to show off.

You can also learn by the example of other educators and school leaders in their transformation to a distance learning environment. The Newsela Blog includes several new pieces authored by expert educators. For example, read the “Distance Learning Diary” by Future Ready Librarian Shannon McClintock Miller or follow our “Ask a Teacher: Taking on Remote Teaching” series to learn recommendations based on FAQs about the remote teaching experience. Finally, review success stories from 3 districts in their lessons learned so far adapting to this new education environment.
