How To Sketchnote: A Step-By-Step Manual for Teachers and Students by Sylvia Duckworth

Reviewed by Erin Whalen

The perfect combination of pedagogy and practice, Sylvia’s new book begins with an overview of why doodling is not just okay, it’s beneficial to the learning process. Sylvia then shares ideas and instructions on sketching – LOTS of them! The book also offers great resources, including links for each idea given as well as other websites, videos, fellow sketchnoters, and so much more!

Doodling is Beneficial

Many of us have been trained to have students sit still with their hands in their laps to have their full attention, but research shows the opposite is true. When students are allowed, or better yet encouraged, to sketch as a form of visual note-taking, they have a better chance of retaining the information in their long-term memory.

Doodling Practice

Duckworth has filled the pages with countless examples and given numerous opportunities to practice. She encourages teachers to create a doodling culture to foster students’ creativity and to develop visual note-taking skills.

Resources

My favorite part of the book is the number of resources offered – and how organized they are! Nearly every page contains a link and the lists of resources in the back of the book are outstanding – organized, easy to read, plentiful, and high quality.

How to Sketchnote: A Step-by-Step Manual for Teachers and Students is a bountiful resource; a gift that keeps on giving!
