Adding Students to Google Classroom

The newly designed Google Classroom now has 3 tabs: Stream, Classwork, and People. Classroom has consolidated things in several places. You can now find all of the settings up in the settings cog at the top. The About tab is replaced by adding a topic of “About/Resources” to the Classwork page. Students and co-teachers are added via the People tab.

People Tab

On the People tab look for the add a person icon. For co-teacher or student you can click the icon and enter their email address.

Settings Cog

Personally, I do not invite students individually. Instead, use the cog at the top of the header.
Settings Cog

The class code is available under the settings cog.
Join code in the settings cog

Click on the tiny triangle next to the code. Suggestion to first RESET the code until you like it. Then choose “Display” to project the code. Ask students to go to classroom.google.com and in the upper right of the class tiles page is a plus icon. They will click the plus icon to join the class and enter the code.

  1. I am trying your “list classes” and everything works until I get to “add students.” I have a page of student emails ready to go, but nothing happens when I click the “add students” button.

    1. Unfortunately the “Add students” only works if you have permission to add students. The default teacher permissions do not allow you to add students from code. I didn’t realize this until I tested it on my school account rather than my tech admin account. I couldn’t do it since teachers do not have permission to do it. sigh.
