Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning

Jennifer Gonzalez (@cultofpedagogy) does it again with a brilliant blog post on improving learning. Previously I shared her post on Worksheet Packets where she identifies what a worksheet is and alternative ideas to using packets. We are all guilty of doing what was done to us as students, it is understandable. However, are those things really best practices for learning? Jennifer shares in her post some research based ideas for making learning sticky!

Quotes

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the article, hopefully they inspire you to read it yourself. It’s good stuff!

On highlighting and going over the important stuff the night before:

“Lots of people call that “studying,” but it turns out it doesn’t really work so well. So why do so many people do it?”

On reviewing concepts:

“Many teachers give regular formative assessments, but most don’t realize that the process of trying to retrieve skills and information from memory reinforces the learning more effectively than simply reviewing it.”

On repeat repeat repeat:

“When we practice a skill or try to remember information, common sense tells us to just keep repeating it until we have it down pat. But…”

Productive struggle is important for learning:

“easy learning is not long-lasting”
