Use Quotations in Your Search

Use Quotations in Your Search

“Use Quotations”

When using a search engine such as Google.com or Bing.com or any other search engine this search technique might help you to more quickly find what you are looking for.

OR

When you type in two words or a phrase into a search box the search engine is looking for the first word OR the second word. Results that contain both words are going to appear higher in the results list than words that only contain one or the other. However, the words do not have to appear together.

Example

If you want to do a search for the new Google Classroom the search results will contain articles about Google Classroom, but they will also include results that mention Google or Classroom.

In the example below, this result is not about Google Classroom at all. It is about using Google Apps in an educational setting.

Quotations

Teach students to put quotations around their search phrases in order to find exactly those words together. “Google Classroom” will find results that have the word classroom next to the word Google. When I search for someone I want to put their first and last name in quotations to increase the likelihood that my results will find that person.

This works when you’re searching for more than 2 words also. If there is a phrase or quote that you are specifically looking for, using quotations around the phrase will make it more likely that you will find your results quickly.
